And in parallel, I am considering starting a business that would push technologies out of Indian academic labs to the market. The bridge between research and innovation has a potential of billions of dollars but it a tricky one to make!

The first of our initiatives TechConnect was held on 4th April 2009 at IIT Bombay. We got some awesome coverage in HT then http://www.ircc.iitb.ac.in/... and http://www.ircc.iitb.ac.in/...

It was held again on 24 Jan 2010 www.ircc.iitb.ac.in/techcon... and http://www.techfest.org/loo... (page 11).

Thereafter our team was involved in internships to make TechTransfer policies for IIT Bombay. At this moment our plan is under review by the current dean for R&D there.

Kanik, thanks for dropping by. I agree that the first aim of all IITs was to churn out engineers. But slowly their missions have been transformed to actively pursue research and technology transfer. This has happened more in 1990s.

You are right, patents are filed for product ideas and not just ideas in thin air. But often a patented idea along is not enough to prove its efficacy. It requires support from multiple other patents/innovation to display a significant performance improvement. Technology transfer cannot happen unless this happens or institutes gear up for know-how transfer.

your notion that was created to do research is faulty, as jawaharlal nehru said in his speech, the purpose of iit's is to create engineers for this country. This has been the first aim of iits since then..

Further, I think there is some misconception regarding the patents which are being filed.. In india, one can not file a patent for ideas, but only for product or process, which means these can be commercially launched anytime.. and in fact many are..
